The Ghost of Spirits

If anyone asks; what is a greater threat than war, civil unrest or natural disaster, obviously, I think, any Indian without the slightest hesitation will answer “The Govern-ment”. No exaggeration or doubt about it. Take a few incidents that plagued the country in the past few months into consideration. In November the Union Government scrapped 86 per cent of paper currency of 500 and 1,000 denomination, pitching citizens into a mad scramble to find alternative ways to buy, sell, and get paid. In March last the central government put a new rule into the annual budget bill giving a...

‘All is not well’ for Modi in UP

With a plethora of faiths, castes and political allegiances, spiced up by garish nepotism, rank criminality and a first-past-the-post voting system prone to wild swings, elections in Uttar Pradesh (UP), the highest populated state in India with more than 20 crore people and the fifth largest in area, are always raucous and notoriously tricky to predict. The state’s 14 crore voters directly elect a sixth of the Lok Sabha, and the state assembly also sends a substantial number of members to the Rajya Sabha. In the 2014 general election the people of the state have given a sweeping majority...
