The noted Bollywood singer Sonu Nigam has shaved his head in response to a call given by a Kolkata-based cleric on the Azaan episode, who announced a reward of Rs 10 lakh to anybody who tonsured Nigam and garland him with old torn shoes.
The cleric replied that only one of the conditions as laid by him has been met by the singer and hence he doesn’t qualify to get the Rs 10 lakh reward. The other conditions to be fulfilled by Sonu Nigam, as per the cleric, include wearing the garland of old torn shoes and visiting every Indian household.
The controversy arose after Nigam complained on Twitter about being woken up by azaans. Reacting on his statement a Kolkata-based cleric had made such an announcement which raked up the issue further.
The singer reacted to the call by Syed Sha Atef Ali Al Quaderi, the vice-president of West Bengal United Minority Council, in a series of tweets, saying “so this is not religious gundagardi” and that he will get his hair shaved.
Nigam told media he raised a social topic and not religious one when he tweeted about being woken up by the sound of azaan, the Muslim call to prayers, and apologised “if someone thought otherwise”.
Though the singer has repeatedly said that his fight is only against use of loudspeakers with blaring sound and not against religious practice, the clerics have started blaming him for attacking on a religion. A number of Bollywood celebs have joined the singer in his crusade and the entire nation is on the boil.
