On the basis of reliable inputs Maharashtra ATS in presence of officer from Department of Telecommunications ( Prosecution branch ) conducted raids in Thane on 19th April 2018.
In one such raid at the house of one male accused aged 28 yrs , R/O Azad Nagar, Thane(W) it was found that he is illegally running a fake telecommunication junction. He is originally from Dist. Azamgarh(UP) . He was running the illegal exchange along with his brother. Total 139 Sim cards , one laptop , 5 SIMboxes/machinesfor call transforming ( illegal international gateways) and 3 routers were seized during the raid.
Acting quickly on the inputs from the accused, another house was raided in Mumbra and 5 illegal international gateways/SIMboxes, 95 SIM cards, 3 routers and one laptop seized from the place. Accused was running the illegal telephone exchange along with his brother and one more partner.
Accordingly a case is registered at ATS Police Station Kalachouki vide C.R. No 9/18 U/s 4,20,25 Indian Telegraph Act(1885), Sec. 3, 6 Indian Wireless & Telegraph Act(1933) & Sec 420,34 I.P.C. against the accused and other two wanted persons.
The accused persons were running the illegal telephone exchanges from last one and half year wherein international VOIP calls were routed through local mobile numbers.They used to convert a VOIP call from abroad into a voice illegally and transfer that voice to beneficiary call receiver in India through illegal international gateway.
Total property amounting to Rs 2,48,000 is seized. Court has remanded the arrested accused in police custody up to 24th April.
As per the preliminary verification by DOT officials total loss of revenue to the national exchequer is about Rs 58 Crores.
Further investigation including terror links is in progress.
