DRI seizes remotely piloted drones in Mumbai

Acting on a tip off, the officers of Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), Nhava Sheva Regional Unit, have effected seizure of remotely piloted aircraft, more popularly known as Drones. Shockingly, these Drones were attempted to be smuggled into the country by cleverly concealing them in a consignment of Children Toys and being imported in Trans India Logistics Park Custom Freight Station, Dist Raigad. The total seizure value is estimated to be around Rs 14.11 lakh.
By virtue of a Notification 16/2015-2020 dated 27July 2016 issued by DGFT has made the import of drones *Restricted* from a policy angle and requires prior clearance from DGCA and an import license from DGFT. This is being dubbed as a major seizure by DRI.
Seen in the light of the above, this catch of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV)/Drones by concealing in a consignment of toys seems to be significant.
In a city like Mumbai, which has several tactical and military installations like Indian Navy, Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Oil Refineries and an International Airport, seizure of drones is alarming. Though the real purpose behind the smuggling of the drones are not known immediately.
Further investigations are still on into the matter.
