Top director reveals his success mantra

Harshad Joshi

Harshad Joshi is a highly reputed name in the Indian television industry. Known for his pleasant

nature, he is considered to be one of the most successful directors today. Well-known for his acumen

and ability to capture the right expressions of every actor, he is the most sought personality amongst top producers of Mumbai.

In an Exclusive interaction with Mitaan Express, Harshad Joshi shares his views:

You are known as a perfectionist. How do you manage to get the best shot and meet the deadlines?

I believe in motivating the actors. It’s a trick! Most actors feel very comfortable working with me as I give them the liberty to express every word written in the script in a novel manner. I register their best expressions in every take, and comfortably persuade them to improve their performance in every scene. This is why I am able to capture the best shot. It’s tough at times, but the strategy works wonders!

All your episodes in ‘Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chasmah’ promote wit and a social message. Is it difficult to shoot such scenes?

I would say it’s extremely challenging to shoot the scenes of any sitcom. However, the USP of a grand show like ‘Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chasmah’ is it’s wonderful script and brilliant performances by the entire cast. Also as a director of this successful show, I remain thoughtful about the quality of every dialogue, movements in every scene and the harmony of characters depicted on the screen. It’s absolutely necessary to take such precautions when my intention is to deliver a social message in a witty manner.

Do you believe that a director too should contribute to the scripting of a television show?

Yes. However, one should always remember that a director should continuously respect and admire the writer’s contribution as he/she is considered as a scene’s architect. A director merely constructs or

produces the best scene based on intelligent inputs of a writer. A director’s involvement in the scripting is considered as a brilliant contribution under the leadership of show’s writer.

Many young readers of Mitaan Express wish to join Bollywood and Indian television industry as actors. What is your advice to these youngsters?

I too read entertainment industry stories published by Mitaan Express often. I urge the youngsters to polish their linguistic skills as Bollywood is a Hindi film industry. These youngsters should be ready for a long struggle, as path to success isn’t full of roses. Aspiring actors should study their limitations too. Let me say this to them: “Don’t aim for success if you want it; just do what you love and believe in, and it will come naturally”. My best wishes to them.
